WhatsApp is one of the leading chat apps out there, with over 800 million users worldwide. Its chat style has been adopted by any number of other apps as well as services, albeit with some complications due to its complicated interfaces and added security measures. However, it's not without its own issues, such as teething difficulties or text-heavy design that "gets in the way". Telegram on the other hand has no such complications - it's more straightforward and functional than WhatsApp's many features.
WhatsApp was launched in 2009 and introduced end-to-end encryption in 2016. The secret messages that are shared between users across the globe can't be read by anyone other than the sender and the recipient. The messages are encrypted using a timer to ensure messages aren't lost if messages aren't sent in time. It also allows messages to be shared with multiple devices. WhatsApp has a clean, minimalist design that is easy on the eye and comes with a host of simple features including voice messages gif support and much more.
Telegram however, was launched in 2013 and has gained over 100 million users since. It's a cloud-based mobile messaging service with a focus on security and offers self-destructing messages, built-in voice calls and more. Additionally, unlike WhatsApp which is backed by Facebook, Telegram is developed by its own company that takes into account the feedback of its users. It has many more features than WhatsApp such as sharing videos of up to 1.5GB size. The interface also comes with an iOS app that can be accessed via PC or Mac. That may be a turn off for some as it's not as accessible as WhatsApp. Telegram also comes with a host of features including status updates, invitational codes and much more. Overall, Telegram is a better messaging app if you're looking for added security and have the patience to master its interface.
WhatsApp has many more users than Telegram and that's why it is
the more popular app of the two. However, that doesn't mean it is the better
option. If you're looking for an easy-to-use messaging service with added
security features, then WhatsApp is your best bet.
Is Telegram Actually More Secure?
The question that’s been on everyone’s mind lately is whether
Telegram is the most secure messaging app. The answer? We can say
unequivocally, yes. But it’s not just because we have a 256-bit key – it’s also
because of our advanced encryption protocol and multi-layer protection system.
Before we move on, let’s get one thing straight. Telegram has never claimed that its encryption client is bullet-proof or even bomb-proof. That’s because the world is full of new methods for breaking encryption. Having said that, even if there are “better” competitors out there, Telegram does have one of the most advanced encryption protocols available on the market right now, so it has attracted a ton of attention.
It all begins with two new “hidden” functions added to Telegram in 2015: SecretChat and GroupStealth. They are designed to be used by users with special needs or requirements.
SecretChat is for people who would like to exchange messages in a way where no one but the sender and the recipient can read them. The “no eavesdropping” feature of SecretChat was achieved by developing a protocol that allows people to send end-to-end encrypted messages that are synchronized with every device they are opened on.
Groups now have their own encryption settings, too. So now there
are two options for Secret Chats in Telegram: full synchronisation (the default
mode) and asynchronous mode, which is handy when you don’t want other group
members to see your activity from other devices.
